To Mr. Matt Smith and Mr. Michael Bird,

As the University of Tasmania’s Director of Facilities Management and the Facilities and Corrective Works Manager, you must value the health and safety of everyone on your campuses.

I therefore call on you to not reduce the hours of UTAS cleaners. You must instead reverse the dangerous cuts to cleaning time and reinstate every cleaner who remains stood down since COVID-19 first hit.  
 
Some of these cleaners do not meet the criteria for Job Seeker and it leaves them without any income in a global pandemic.

I understand that the University of Tasmania has also enlisted the cleaning services of an additional contractor. This is despite the availability of those who were stood down.  
 
UTAS seems to have no respect for cleaners, despite the essential nature of their work.

The university has refused to meet with cleaners, failed to take responsibility for their working conditions, and publicly declared them liars.

The significant reduction in cleaning hours and failure to reinstate all cleaners, is not only a slashing of essential workers’ livelihoods, but also a threat to Tasmania’s COVID-free status.

I am aware of the claim that UTAS has increased its cleaning spend by $1 million this year. However, it is only for the peak COVID-19 period. This public claim also failed to mention that that number included purchases such as hand sanitiser.

It will take more than extra hand sanitiser to maintain Tasmania’s COVID-free status. It cannot be done without cleaners. Do not reduce their hours.

I also have heard that UTAS is claiming the new cleaning schedule will not mean the campuses are cleaned less frequency, yet cleaners have been stood down and cleaning time reduced. That doesn't add up.

I appreciate that UTAS is concerned about the reduction in international student enrolments. But I wonder why anyone would pay top dollar to go to a university that doesn’t prioritise cleaning?

We need UTAS to be a safe and clean place for students and staff, and for Tasmania as a whole.

As the two of you are the Director of Facilities Management and the Facilities and Corrective Works Manager, I ask that you reverse the dangerous cuts to cleaning hours and to reinstate every cleaner who remains stood down.
